Review : DETOUR – Is this Brisbane’s best new inner city restaurant ?

Brisbane's best inner city restaurants

For those of us who were big fans of Public in the CBD it was concerning to hear that it had been sold in the middle of last year and much of the team had moved on. Where would we go for the fantastic elegant sharing plates that we had passed around over business lunches, Mothers Day and even Valentine’s !? But fear not the ex-Executive Chef has opened in a brand new space in Wolloongabba’s funky Logan rd precinct and it is fast proving to be one of Brisbane’s best inner city restaurants!

The Space

A newly renovated heritage building once home to auction houses and antique shops. The place is light, bright and has a quasi-industrial feel with lots of exposed brick, warm timbers and a horribly expensive copper roof feature. Its a notoriously difficult place to park with a number of good neighbours so leave the car at home and catch an Uber for a long lunch or dinner.

The Service

Brisk, efficient and friendly. Several of the team have worked together before and it shows. I was offered a taste of all the Chardonnays on the wine list AND a we all enjoyed a complimentary glass of Champagne each which we did indeed go on to purchase. Great pro-active PR for a new venture.

One of the delightful surprises on the team is the inclusion of Brisbane legend and possibly the best Maitre De in the city – Macca, who comes in twice a week to keep himself involved and doing what he loves. At 74 he would be forgiven for retiring and putting his feet up at the bar!

The Food

The controversial and trademarked dish Kentucky Fried Duck is on the menu as is the stunning salmon with ants (  lemony) and the delicious Hawaiian potato curry. The dishes are still meant for sharing and are really well priced.

The prep area is in the main dining room so you can see the Chef and his helpers weave their magic before the food comes out on the pass. Each dish is beautifully presented and some are really too pretty to eat.

I’ve had 3 ladies lunches at Detour in only 4 weeks so that pretty much sums it all up. In a town that has not had a lot of fresh new dining options for a while its great to have found a place that ticks all the boxes .

Trust me, take the Detour and make your way here. Its definitely one of Brisbane’s best inner city  restuarants and perhaps the best of them all.
